The Curve Ball…

Without going into too much lovely detail… I’ve been sick. Too sick for a holiday.

It all started at about 10:30PM on December 31st. If it was alcohol and party related, I could forgive it, but even now, I’m still coughing. I had to leave the new years celebrations early, and since then up to today (and likely tomorrow) effort has been minimal, as it’s taking effort right now just to do the basics. Though I think I’m finally coming good.

That’s not to say there haven’t been photo’s… but Kyoto has been a bust because of illness… Sadly I don’t think I’ll get to go back, and todays day trip to Koyasan (Mt Koya) only serves to strengthen my efforts over the next few weeks.

the guy with the 1d and what looks like a 16-352.8 did he know who those people are he was taking a group photo of or are you just randomly asking people in groups for photo’s for the hell of it.

    Do you know that guy?

Im heading off to japan on the 8th Feb, looking forward to it, do you recommend a 70-200 as currently my plan is to take a 16mm Fisheye 50mm F1.4 and 24-70F2.8 do you think ill need anything longer than that?

I have no idea who that fellow was with the 1D. He was hanging with a group of friends, and one wanted a photo with me (maybe he thought I was press or ‘someone important’) His friend with the 1 series took the photo, while I snapped off that shot.

In most cases I myself and uncomfortable with random street photography with a focus on one individual (random usually). It’s hard to communicate, and not always, but I’ve found Japanese to be a little on the reserved side. I’m trying to ‘get over it’ but I’ll be honest it’s hard.

As for recommendations. I think the 70-200 is a fantastic lens, I personally can’t live without it over here… but to be honest, I use it least of all. That said, some of the upcoming shots in the next 24 hours couldn’t have been done without it. Unless you’re an aperture junkie though (I am unfortunately) try and limit yourself with the lighter one. Higher ISO capacity these days has made it much easier to get away with smaller apertures.
I can’t comment on a fisheye, but They can either make or break shots from what I’ve seen… A bit like tilt shift lenses. Moderation is the key.
I think though, the 24-70 will be the ideal lens for your trip. If you wanted to narrow it down… I honestly wouldn’t. You’ve really got a solid kit there, and the 50mm prime doesn’t weight a whole lot, so it’s not like it’s going to hold you back.
Good luck, I think you’ll enjoy it here. Most people do. I hate it… which is why I come here so often.

PS. I really recommend getting advice from other people, though they’ll likely echo what I’ve said. FredMiranda is a good place for questions, without getting you head cut off.

Hey dude, sorry to hear you were down with The Bug, I was wondering what had happened given the gap since your last post. Been a nasty December for getting sick.
I am vicariously enjoying Japan, your photos, and your blog. Hope you get back to health asap.

I can’t really explain the first bout. I was out at Shibuya ready to bring in the new year, about 10:45PM, it felt like a switch had been flipped in my head, imagine having a drink spiked… That’s what it felt like (spiked drinks have happened to me). You feel completely helpless, and I just had to leave.
Getting back to my hotel, I was sick through the new year. On the 1st, I couldn’t get out of bed, so I slept the day (and night) off. The next day I felt great, actually I felt really fine, but crashed out in the early afternoon. The next day I came down with something else… A flu, not sure. Anyway, that had me up to pretty much my last post.
I’ll have another tonight. ^_^ Only returned from a few days down south (Kyoto, and Hakone).
